Christian crumpled the thick, cream-colored card in his hand and threw it angrily across the room. He leaned back in his chair, resting his head on the back of it, staring up at the ceiling of his bedroom, the words from the invitation still swimming in front of him.

Christian squeezed his eyes shut, trying to blot out the words. Stephen Cane, with his coffee-colored eyes, curly black hair, naturally tanned skin, and perpetual five o'clock shadow, was the biggest, most narcissistic asshole on the planet. He had a reputation for being a lothario and had a string of past lovers littered throughout New Orleans to prove it. Considering that wolves were naturally monogamous, Christian thought his behavior was outrageous. That reason alone was enough to make Christian want to avoid the ball at all costs, but he knew he'd have to attend, even if only for appearance's sake.

Their community was small, and he had his own reputation to uphold. His parents would insist on his attendance. It didn't matter that he was two years out of college, going to veterinary school, working his way through as a vet tech and old enough to be calling his own shots. Tradition was tradition, and there were certain things he couldn't go against, even if he wanted to. So to the ball he would go and most likely hate every rotten minute of it.

He wallowed for a few more minutes until he heard his computer beep with an incoming message. Christian sat up, not wanting to feel the hope rising in his chest, but unable to help it. A smile broke out over his face, dimpling his cheeks, when he saw the IM request. Quickly he opened it up and had to choke back a laugh when he saw the first comment.

Wolfsbane15: Did u get that stupid invite 2?

He bit his lip and typed a reply.

DocWolf24: Yup *sigh*

Wolfsbane15: Why the dramaz?

DocWolf24: *Rolls eyes* rents making me go or I'd skip it like last 6 yrs

Wolfsbane15: um dude, aren't u like old or smth?

DocWolf24: Fuck u, u going?

Wolfsbane15: yes, same deal, rents

DocWolf24: Hi pot, I'm kettle. STFU >: o

Wolfsbane15: Hey, maybe we cld finally meet

Christian stared at the screen, his heart pounding. They'd been chatting in a shifter chat room for several years now and had become more than just chat buddies. Even though they'd never met in real life and he didn't know Wolfsbane15's real name, he considered the guy a friend. He'd heard all the warnings about people on the internet, but the dude had told him shit that just couldn't be made up. They chatted, they e-mailed, they even texted back and forth, but never once had they talked on the phone, sent a picture of themselves, or even contemplated meeting in real life. Until now.
